Hi, Amy! I wish that Tumblr would have put a time stamp on your message because I haven’t been on Tumblr for ages and ages. I don’t have the slightest clue if you sent this message to me 20 minutes ago or last year. Thank you for sending it, regardless of when it was sent. <3

Infinitely intrigued?! I’d like to think that’s a good thing, but because no one has said that to me before I’m a pretty poor judge of those words. And although pixels aren’t any way to begin to know someone, from what you’ve shown of yourself on your little corner of the internet, you seem like a very charming person. How are you? I hope you’re well.

A letter to Bon Iver

I wrote this several weeks ago, but after much searching I’ve been unable to find a way to get this to the members of Bon Iver. So, I’ll post it here. Maybe they’ll see it someday.

“Bon Iver,

I want to thank you for your performance of ‘Holocene’ on SNL. I have to tell you now, today, while it’s still fresh in my mind, that your music has a lasting impression on the lives of many.

Times are hard and music is my greatest escape from the hills and valleys of running your own business. As I was working at my desk last night, wondering what I’m going to do, my elderly and ailing grandmother came into the room. She heard the song playing on my computer.

“What kind of music is that?” she asked. At first I thought she might have been sarcastic, but I soon realized she was sincere.

I told her I didn’t know. I’d never thought about it before.

She surprised me. “It’s so soothing.”

And so I dropped everything I was doing and brought her a chair. I started the video from the beginning and took her hand, and we sat together, side-by-side, as we watched your performance.

When she first saw the stage, she lit up and I heard her say, “Just like the big bands!” And this woman, who never much cared for music, watched in total silence you playing your song, in awe of each of your talents and your musicianship.

In all my life here in her home, where she raised me like her own child, I have never seen her so visibly pleased with a piece of music. We watched it again and again, barely saying a word to each other. It was such a simple moment, us listening to you together, her hand in mine, connected, but it was profound. As she nears the end of her life, and she is in my care rather than me in hers, each moment like this becomes more and more precious. Years from now I will still look back on that night and feel her next to me. I will cherish this memory in my heart for all my life. Thank you for making that possible.
